Asterodiaspis variolosa (Ratzeburg, 1870) (Asterolecaniidae: Asterodiaspis)Nomenclatural History
- Coccus variolosus Ratzeburg 1870: 187. Type data: GERMANY: Kunersdorf, near Potsdam, on oak.. Syntypes, female, accepted valid name Notes: Type material probably lost (Russell, 1941). This genus designation and species was questioned by Hagen in 1887 when he stated that "C. variolosus is believed by Prof. Comstock to be No. 122 A. quercicola Bouché".
- Coccus quercicola Eckstein 1897: 556. junior synonym Notes: Eckstein, 1897: 556, removed Coccus quercicola from Coccidae. Current status: Fernald (1903: 54) listed this name as a junior synonym of Asterolecanium variolosum (Ratzeburg) now Asterodiaspis variolosa (Ratzeburg) (Family Asterolecaniidae) (Williams & Ben-Dov, 2009: 39).
- Asterolecanium variolosum (Ratzeburg, 1870); Cockerell 1899j: 269. change of combination
- Asterodiaspis variolosa (Ratzeburg, 1870); Borchsenius 1960d: 194. change of combination
- Asterodiaspis variolasa (Ratzeburg, 1870); Ülgentürk & Dokuyucu 2019: 485. misspelling of species epithet

Remarks
- Systematics: Asterodiaspis variolosa is close to A. luteola (Russell) and A. variabilis (Russell); however, it can be easily differentiated from the other two species by having the following combination of character states (character states of A. luteola and A. variabilis in parentheses): each spiracular pore band with 32–80 pores (A. luteola with 9–16 quinquelocular pores in each spiracular furrow; A. variabilis with 21–31 quinquelocular pores in each furrow); and perivulvar pores with 5 or more loculi (perivulvar pores with 5 loculi absent: in A. variabilis, each with 8–10 loculi; and in A. luteola, each with 10 loculi). (Kondo, 2022a)
- Structure: Adult female subcircular, 1.7–2.3 mm wide, becoming slightly convex with age, covered by a thin, translucent wax cover, greenish or yellowish, often of the same color as the host surface, with a narrow fringe of whitish waxy filaments around margin. Slide-mounted adult female nody subcircular to elongate oval, 0.7–1.5 mm long, 0.5–1.1 mm wide, without anal indentation. Dorsal derm membranous. Dorsal margin with large 8-shaped pores. (Kondo, 2022a)
- Biology: Asterodiaspis variolosa is parthenogenetic and has 1 generation a year. (Kondo, 2022a)
- General Remarks: Description and illustration of adult female by Russell (1941), Borchsenius (1960d), Gill (1993), Kosztarab (1996) and by Stumpf & Lambdin (2006). Test of female and larva described and illustrated by Russell (1941). First-instar described and illustrated by Borchsenius (1960d). Photograph in Kondo, 2022a.
