Remarks
- Systematics: M. personata can be confused with M. apicata, but differs as follows (characteristics of M. apicata given in parenthesis):M. personata has the sclerotized area on the head forming a somewhat flattened bulge (forming a rounded cone); eyes each represented by an unsclerotized boss (each modified into a pointed spur); and ventral microducts absent from around the mouthparts and anterior spiracles (microducts numerous near the mouthparts and anterior spiracles). (Watson, 2002)
- Structure: Female scale circular; very convex; exuviae central; colour gray or black, with the exuviae shining black; the position of the exuviae is usually marked with a white dot and a concentric ring of the same colour; ventral scale well developed (Comstock, 1883). Female scale very black, almost hemispherical or somewhat thimble-shaped, with the exuviae central, that of the male flat, oval, lighter in colour (Ferris, 1941d). Colour photograph of the scale cover and general appearance see Carvalho & Aguiar (1997). Adult female scale cover 0.5‒1.0 mm long, almost hemispherical, often taller than wide, black, brittle, with central exuviae (Watson 2002).
- Biology: Scales apparently occurring normally on the leaves (Ferris, 1941d).
- Economic Importance: This polyphagous species, distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, has been recorded as citrus pest in Madeira (Balachowsky, 1938a; Carvalho & Aguiar, 1997) and mango in Egypt (Salama & Saleh, 1972).
- General Remarks: Description and illustration of adult female by Ferris (1941d), Balachowsky (1951, 1958b), Chou (1985, 1986), Zahradnik (1990b) and by Colon-Ferrer & Medina-Gaud (1998). Moghaddam & Watson (2021) consider the presence of this species in Iran as doubtful. Color photograph in Kondo & Watson (2022b).
