Remarks
- Systematics: Subfamily: Coccinae A, Pulvinarini (Choi & Lee, 2019) GeneBank Accession No. AB439533 (Yokogawa & Yahara, 2009). Live specimens of Milviscutulus mangiferae are very similar to Protopulvinaria pyriformis. (Pellizzari & Porceleli, 2014) Milviscutulus mangiferae is also similar to Protopulvinaria longivalvata in body shape and the position of the anal plates on the dorsum but differs by lacking distorted coxae (present in P. longivalvata), and shorter anal plates (long in P. longivalvata). (Abd-Rabou & Evans, 2018)
- Structure: See colour photograph in Hamon & Williams (1984), Hodgson (1994a), Wong et al. (1999). Crawler: is flat and light yellow (Ben-Dov et al., 1975). Adult: body of female flat, 4–5 mm in length, covered by a pale-green, shiny, almost transparent shield that tends to become brown, opaque and somewhat convex when and after producing eggs (Plant Pests of the Middle East, online). The body is almost triangular, bluntly pointed at the anterior apex, broadly rounded posteriorly. Preovipositing females are yellowish – green. The dorsal surface of a fully grown reproducing female is sclerotized and brown (Ben-Dov et al., 1975).
- Biology: This pest develops three annual generation in the Coastal Plain, Israel; nymphs of the first generation appear in March-May, of second generation in early June, and those of third generation in Sptember (Avidov & Zaitzov, 1960). Reproduction is parthenogenetic, however Otanes (1936) and Avidov & Zaitzov (1960) reported on the occurrence of males at a very low rate. Blumberg & Swirski (1984) studied the encapsulation response to parasitoids. Reported as a mango pest in Israel (Avidov & Harpaz, 1969) and South Africa (Kamburov, 1987). Wysoki et al. (1993) reviewed the biology, economic importance, natural enemies and control in Israel. Buckley & Gullan (1991) showed, in Papua New Guinea, that attendance by the aggressive ant, Oecophylla smaragdina (Fabricius), reduces the rate of parasitization.
- Economic Importance: This species damages mangos by direct feeding on the plant juices and by the reduction of photosynthetic capacity as a result of its production of ‘honeydew’ and the subsequent growth of sooty mold on the leaves. Heavy infestations may result in reduced tree vigour and leaf size, causing yellowing of the leaves, leaf drop and death of branches. (Abd-Rabou & Evans, 2018)
- General Remarks: Good description and illustration of the adult female given by Zimmerman (1948), De Lotto (1957c), Ben-Dov et al. (1975), Tao et al. (1983), Hamon & Williams (1984), Williams & Watson (1990), Tang (1991) and by Hodgson (1994a).
