Remarks
- Systematics: https://zoobank.org/3E3A2BC0-DC4E-4C07-834A-D56638DA14BA (Normark, et al., 2022)
The modern concept of the diagnostic characters of Aspidiotus was defined by Ferris (1938a), Balachowsky (1948b, 1956), Ferris (1952a), Takagi (1957, 1969a), Williams & Watson (1988) and by Danzig (1993). The genus Brainaspis (type species: Aspidiotus kelleyi Brain) was synonymized with Aspidiotus by Lindinger, 1937. Dr. Sadao Takagi (in personal communication, 8 January 2003, to Yair Ben-Dov) suggested that Aspidiotus kelleyi Brain and Aspidiotus sinensis (Ferris) may belong to a separate genus, for which the name Brainaspis MacGillivray, 1921, is available. Aspidiotus spp. are divided into three major clades (Afrotropical, Australasian, and Palearctic in origin), The positioning of Aspidiotus species on the phylogeny in Schneider, et al., (2018) and their strict adherence to a stereotypical form lead them to hypothesize that the Aspidiotus- type is likely to be plesiomorphic – either for the entire tribe, or for some large clade within it, rather than convergent. (Schneider, et al., 2018) The Australian genus most likely to be confused with Aspidiotus is Octaspidiotus MacGillivray, 1921, which can be distinguished by the presence of lanceolate setae at the base of L2 and L3 (Takagi 1984, Normark, et al., 2022).
- Structure: This genus is characterized by following combination of morphological features: (i) 3 pairs of well-developed lobes; (ii) median lobes usually with lateral notches on outer or both edges; (iii) small paraphyses arising from bases of median to third lobes; (iv) plates as long as or slightly longer than lobes, present laterally as far forward as the fifth segment, and becoming simpler beyond third lobe; (v) dorsal macroducts usually fairly long and slender; (vi) prepygidial submarginal ducts present; (vii) anterior spiracles each with an associated area of dermal granulation, and (viii) antennae often with sclerotized spur, and each bearing one robust seta. (Williams & Watson, 1988)
- General Remarks: Definition and characters by Froggatt (1914), Dietz & Morrison (1916a), Brain (1919), Green (1928), Fullaway (1932), Ferris (1938a), Balachowsky (1948b, 1956), Borchsenius (1950b), Ferris (1952a), Gomez-Menor Guerrero (1962), Takagi (1957, 1969a), Bazarov & Shmelev (1971), Velasquez (1971), Danzig (1980b), Williams & Watson (1988) and by Danzig (1993).
