Remarks
- Systematics: GenBank accession: (Japan, LC121499.1) The internal transcribed spacer 1 homologous sequence from Taiwan from GenBank has accession number EU307273. Two haplotypes were found in China, and the most common haplotype, DN_JM, was observed in 71% of the population samples.(He, et al., 2014) This species is similar to the pink pineapple mealybug, Dysmicoccus brevipes (Cockerell) in its general appearance. However, D. neobrevipes is distinguishable from D. brevipes by the shorter dorsal setae (approximately 10-20 µm) on the dorsum of abdominal segments VII and VIII. (Tanaka & Uesato, 2012)
- Structure: Colour photo of adult females by Gullan & Martin (2009).
- Biology: Detailed life history analyses on four different host plants in Qin, et al., 2011. Their honeydew is rich in sugars, amino acids, niacinamide, protein, mineral elements and vitamin B , which supports the creation of fungus-insect galls on the roots of the host plants. One or more mealy bugs of different generations live inside the galls. The cavity of the fungus-insect gall provides a shelter for mealy bugs survival and reproduction. Because the gall's crusty walls are made by the mycelia of Phlebopus marginatus rather than plant tissues, D. neobrevipes mouthparts penetrate through the gall and can extract nutrients from the host plant root.
