Remarks
- Systematics: Aonidiella Berlese & Leonardi has been synonymized with Chrysomphalus by early authors. It differs from Chrysomphalus in the cephalothorax being sclerotized and reniform, in the prepygidial lobes curving posteriorly to the pygidium, and the paraphyses are shorter than the adjacent lobes (Takagi, 1969a; Williams & Watson, 1988). Aonidiella in 2022 contained 32 species, although possibly not all of them were congeneric. (Watson & Kondo, 2022a)
- Structure: Scale cover of adult female circular, flat, usually quite pale, with darker central exuviae. Scale cover of
immature male similar to female but oval and smaller, with subcentral exuviae. Slide-mounted adult female body broadly pyriform to strongly reniform, with prosoma becoming enlarged with maturity, usually produced posterolaterally into lateral lobes and highly sclerotized in most species. (Watson & Kondo, 2022a)
- General Remarks: Definition and characters by McKenzie (1938, 1939, 1956), Borchsenius (1950b), Lupo (1954a), Balachowsky (1948b, 1956), Gomez-Menor Guerrero (1962), Takagi (1969a), Velasquez (1971) and by Williams & Watson (1988).
