Remarks
- Systematics: Ph. avenae is similar to the North American species Ph. colemani. Danzig & Gavrilov-Zimin (2014) stated that "Juging (sic) on the original description and figure"...Ph. balachowskyi .... "differs from Ph. avenae in the absence of several thoracicicerarii only. However, such reduction of thoracic cerarii is unual element of individual variability in many species of mealybugs and can not be used to our mind for the substantiation of species independency."
- Biology: Occurring on the roots, corms and rhizomes of various ornamental plants and inside the leaf sheaths of grasses.
- Economic Importance: Occuring on plants of economic importance to horticulture. Frequenly intercepted on corms and rhizomes imported into Britain and the U.S.A. (Williams & Miller, 1985).
- General Remarks: Description and illustration of adult female by Ter-Grigorian (1973), Williams & Miller (1985) and by Danzig (2003). Description of adult female by Borchsenius (1949) and by Tang (1992). Description of female third-instar nymph by Ter-Grigorian (1973). Description of the adult female of the junior synonym, Phenacoccus balachowskyi given by Savescu (1984).
