Remarks
- Systematics: Lindinger (1936: 152) regarded Aspidiotus populi Glaser (1877) as synonym of Aspidiotus gigas Thiem (1934). Borchsenius (1966: 370) regarded A. populi Glaser as species incerta sedis. This species was reported to have uniparental as well as biparental populations (Schmutterer, 1959).
- Structure: The scale of adult female is more or less circular, moderately large convex and of a dark greyish brown colour; exuviae rather a deep orange, the second pellicle being usually masked by secretionary matter and of a similar colour to the rest of the scale; on removing the scale and sublying female, the ventral scale may be observed as a circular powdery white film on the host plant; diameter 1.5-2 mm (Hall, 1925). Slide-mounted adult female pyriform; prosoma sclerotised at maturity. Anterior and posterior spiracles without associated disc pores. Pygidium with 3 pairs of lobes. Median lobes (L1) well developed, parallel, each lobe asymmetrical, with 1 notch on outer margin; median space containing 2 plates no longer than L1. Second lobes (L2) slightly convergent, each lobe asymmetrical, with 1 notch on outer margin. Third lobes (L3) very small. Lateral plates present, each plate short and denticulate apically; sometimes 2 or 3 exterior atrophied plates present on abdominal segment V. (Moghaddam & Watson, 2021)
- Biology: Found in thick incrustations on branches of Ceratonia siliqua together with populations of Hemiberlesia lataniae and Lepidosaphes pinniformis (Bodenheimer, 1924).
- Economic Importance: This Palearctic species is a pest of deciduous fruit trees, mainly pears and plums (Balachowsky, 1950b; Schmutterer et al., 1957), as well to forest trees (Zahradnik, 1990a).
- General Remarks: Good description and illustration of adult female by Bodenheimer (1924), Hall (1925), Balachowsky (1948a, 1950b), Zahradník (1952), Bachmann (1953), Brookes & Hudson (1968), Tereznikova (1986) and by Danzig (1993). Description of the second instar nymph by Brookes & Hudson (1968).
