Nomenclatural History

Remarks

• Systematics: Icerya zeteki was listed as a synonym of Icerya brasiliensis in the catalogue of Margarodidae (Ben-Dov, 2005: 193), and the synonymy was attributed to Vayssiere (1929). Later, Unruh & Gullan (2008: 24-25) discussed this synonymy and concluded as follows: In fact, Vayssiere redescribed I. Zeteki and considered synonymizing the two species, but did not do so because he wanted to examine more material (Vayssiere, 1929: 85). He (Vayssiere) discussed comments made by Cockerell about the external similarity of I. Zeteki and I. Brasiliensis (Cockerell, 1914b). Vayssiere's description of I. Zeteki was based on non-type material and his redescription of I. Brasiliensis was based on material from Green's collection that derived from Hempel's collection (Vayssiere, 1926: 321). Unruh & Gullan (2008) transferred Icerya zeteki and f Icerya brasiliensis to Crypticerya, treated them as distinct species, and indicated that adult females of C. zeteki and C. brasiliensis differ by the number of ventral cicatrices (seven and three, respectively), yet Vayssiere did not discuss these structures in either of his descriptions. There is also some taxonomic confusion between Crypticerya similisa (Morrison) and C. zeteki. These species have been separated by differences in the number of cicatrices, i.e., 5 in C. similis and 7 in C. zeteki; however, the original description of C. zeteki (as Icerya zeteki) does not mention the number of cicatrices, and the available type specimens of C. zeteki have 5 cicatrices, not 7 as reported by some authors. • Structure: Based on the specimens collected in Maranhão, the adult female Crypticerya zeteki measures about 5.4-7.7 mm long and range in colour from dark orange to almost red, with dark brown legs. They are covered by a thick layer of white wax with series of tufts and filaments, as follows: (i) a long caudal tuft, 6.6-13.5 mm long, (ii) a cephalic tuft (always shorter than the caudal tuft), (iii) lateral filaments, with those closest to the caudal tuft longer than the remaining filaments and (iv) an ovisac 4.1-8.5 mm long. • Biology: This species of scale insects has been identified as hermaphroditic based on the cytology of their gonads. (Mongue, et al., 2021)
• Economic Importance: Plants infested by C. zeteki showed leaf senescence, stunted growth and poor fruit production. (Ramos, et al., 2017)
