Remarks
- Systematics: Borchsenius (1966) synonymized Melanaspis bromiliae (Leonardi) with Melanaspis smilacis (Comstock), while Deitz & Davidson (1986) regarded it a distinct species. (GenBank Accession No.: HM474234) (Ramasubramian, et al., 2016). Melanaspis bromiliae can be separated from other Melanaspis species by its preference for pineapple as a host. It resembles M. tenebricosa in lacking perivulvar pores (which are present in M. obscura) but does not have a paraphysis arising from the interlobular space between the median and 2nd lobes (with 1 paraphysis in this location in M. tenebricosa) (Gunawardana et al. 2022).
- Structure: Scale cover of adult female circular, flat, 1.5–2.5 mm in diameter, brown with black exuviae central or subcentral; ventral scale cover brown (Gunawardana et al. 2022).
- General Remarks: Description and illustration of adult female by Deitz & Davidson (1986), Gill (1997) and by Colon-Ferrer & Medina-Gaud (1998). Colour photograph by Gill (1997) and Gunawardana et al (2022).
