Remarks
- Systematics: Melanaspis is related to Mycetaspis but differs in the absence of the broad protuberance on cephalic margin. The lobe-associated pygidial paraphyses in Melanaspis are numerous, a character distinguishing it from Greenoidea. In Melanaspis the pygidial apex forms and obtuse angle, while in Acutaspis the apex is more acute.
The phylogeny in Schneider, et al. (2018) highlights several problematic species with questionable
boundaries. Within the Melanaspis clade, several Acutaspis species are interdigitated on the tree..However, Melanaspis was recovered to be a monophyletc genus with strong support.
- Structure: Female scale usually thick, rough, dark, matte black, brown or dark grey, and sub-circular
convex shape. Male puparium flattened oval, clearer. (Hosseininaveh, et al., 2016)
- General Remarks: Definition and characters by Ferris (1941d), Borchsenius (1950b), Lupo (1954a), Balachowsky (1951, 1958b) and by Deitz & Davidson (1986).
The analysis of Schneider, et al., 2018 recovered three independent origins of ant association in
Aspidiotini: 1. Melanaspis spp., 2. Morganella conspicua, and 3.Affirmaspis cederbergensis + Melissoaspis spp. The two ant-associated Melanaspis species are recovered as sisters with strong support.
