Nomenclatural History

Lichtenstein

Type species: Fonscolombia graminis Lichtenstein
by subsequent designation
.
accepted valid name
Notes: There has been considerable confusion about the family assignment for this genus. Cockerell (1988m) and Lindinger (1923, 1937) considered it to be an eriococcid. Hoy (1963) treated "Fonscolombia Cockerell (not of Lichtenstein 1877)" as a junior synonym of Pseudochermes. He also treated Fonscolombia Lichtenstein with type species Coccus radicum-graminis Fonscolombe as a valid genus in the Eriococcidae. Ben-Dov & Matile-Ferrero (1989 and 1989a) established that Fonscolombia Lichtenstein with type species Fonscolombia graminis belongs in the Pseudococcidae and Coccus radicumgraminis is placed in the genus Lecanopsis in the Coccidae.
Type species proposed by Ben-Dov and Matile-Ferrero (1989b).

Remarks
- Systematics: Subfamily: Phenacoccinae (Choi & Lee)
There has been considerable confusion about the family assignment for this genus.
Ben-Dov & Matile-Ferrero (1989) have shown that the nominal type species, Coccus radicumgraminis Fonscolombe, was a misidentification by Lichtenstein (1877a), of Fonscolombia graminis Lichtenstein. Further, Ben-Dov & Matile-Ferrero (1989a) applied to ICZN to fix Foscolombia graminis Lichtenstein as type species. The application was adopted by Opinion 1654 (1991), and the name Fonscolombia Lichtenstein was placed by this Opinion, on the Official List of Generic Names in Zoology.
- Structure: Fonscolombia Lichtenstein is characterized in having; (i) 6-8 segmented antennae; (ii) well-developed legs; (iii) claw with or without denticle; (iv) quinquelocular pores present or absent on venter and (v) reduced cerarii number (1-6) in posterior abdominal segments. (Kaydan, 2014)
- Biology: Female covered with white powdery wax. Ovisac woolly, white. Generally found on the roots of the host plant. (Kaydan, 2014)
- General Remarks: Definition and characters by Ben-Dov & Matile-Ferrero (1989) and by Danzig (2007). Good definition and characters of junior synonym, Euripersia, given by Borchsenius (1948a, 1949), Williams (1962), Danzig (1971, 1980b), Ter-Grigorian (1973), Tereznikova (1975), Kosztarab & Kozár (1988F) and by Tang (1992).
