Remarks
- Systematics: Subfamily DIASPIDINAE Tribe DIASPIDINI Subtribe CHIONASPIDINA (Normark, et al., 2019)
Aulacaspis is immediately separated from Chionaspis, which has marginal gland spines and ducts anterior to segment 2, but without setae between the median lobes, and Pseudaulacaspis which has setae between the median lobes (Williams & Watson, 1988). The junior synonym, Semichionaspis was described by Tang (1986) as close to Duplachionaspis, but differing by the presence of lobe-like derm prominence between the antennae and ear-like process on each lateroposterior corner of the head and by the anterior margin between the antennae of the 1st stage larvae not concave.
Normark, et al., 2019 determined that Aulacaspis is not a monophyletic genus. Aulacaspis comprises 3 clades: (a) a core clade of true Aulacaspis, including the type species A. rosae (Virey) along with A. nitida Scott, A. rosarum Borchsenius, A. vitis (Green), A. tubercularis Newstead, A. alisiana Takagi and . yasumatsui Takagi; (b) A. yabunikkei Kuwana, sister to Duplachionaspis MacGillivray; and (c) a clade
comprising A. crawii (Cockerell), A. spinosa (Maskell), A. distylii Takahashi and A. difficilis (Cockerell), which is sister to Chionaspis + Duplachionaspis + A. yabunikkei. (Normark, et al., 2019)
- Structure: Adult female body elongate with the prosoma swollen and demarcated from the metathorax by a distinct constriction. Prosomatic tubercles often pronounced. Antenna with a long seta. Anterior spiracles with numerous disc pores; posterior spiracles with disc pores in most species. Some smaller dorsal ducts and marginal gland spines present on the second and third abdominal segments laterally. (Zhou, 2011)
Adult female of the junior synonym, Semichionaspis, was described as fusiform, sometimes with the thorax swollen and with the abdominal segments strongly or moderately lobed laterally. Pygidial lobes in 3 pairs nd well developed. Median lobes sunken into the pygidium, elongate, with inner margin parallel in the basal half and then divergent, basal zygosis not developed (Tang, 1986).
- General Remarks: Detailed description by Williams & Watson (1988).
