Remarks
- Systematics: Subfamily ASPIDIOTINAE Tribe ODONASPIDINI (Normark, et al., 2019)
The genus Berlesaspidiotus has been regarded as a good genus by Ben-Dov (1988b), although it was suppressed as a synonym of Odonaspis by some authors (Ferris, 1937; Takagi, (1959, 1969a). One of the generic characters is the invagination of each antenna in a dermal pocket. Aono (2009) observed that each of the antennae is situated in a dermal invagination on specimens referable to Odonaspis schizostachyi. Other characters of Berlesaspidiotus are also found in species of Odonaspis, and thus Aono (2009) suggested that there seems to be no unique
combination of characters for recognizing Berlesaspidiotus as a distinct genus. Aono (2009) regarded Berlesaspidiotus as a synonym of Odonaspis, but did not formally introduce the synonymy.
Odonaspis is very similar to Froggattiella Leonardi, 1900 in body shape and in having two pairs of pygidial scleroses on the pygidium, but adult females of Froggattiella possess a tuft of gland spines on the apex of the pygidium that is lacking in female Odonaspis. (Chen, Jian & Xing, 2024)
- Structure: Adult female circular to oval. Pygidium triangular, usually with single median lobe at apex; without plates or gland spines. Pygidial margin with or without internal intersegmental scleroses. Anterior spiracles each associated with numerous disc pores. Anus situated near centre of pygidium. Ducts usually all same size on dorsal and ventral surfaces, small and abundant. Dorsal and ventral median surfaces of abdominal segments I–IV with transverse rows of small spicules. Margins of dorsal segments V–VIII with fusiform paraphyses. Perivulvar pores present. (Moghaddam & Watson, 2021)
- General Remarks: Definition and characters by Robinson (1917), Fullaway (1932), Kuwana (1933), Ferris (1937e, 1938a), Balachowsky (1948b, 1953g, 1958b), Borchsenius (1950b), Bustshik (1958), Almeida (1969), Takagi (1969a), Ben-Dov (1980a, 1988b) and by Williams & Watson (1988).
