Remarks
- Systematics: The description of the synonym Monophlebus stebingii octocaudata was from the male only (Green, 1908a). Phylogenetic analysis confirms that the mango mealybug belongs to the family Monophlebidae. Minor genetic differences in both the ITS1 and the COI barcode region were noted among D. mangiferae collected from different geographic localities. These genetic differences revealed the existence of two genotypes of D. mangiferae that are region specific but not host-specific. (Ashfaq, et al., 2011)
- Structure: The adult female elliptical or elongate oval in shape with anterior margin sinuate, posterior end rounded, dorsal side slightly convex while the ventral side flat, about 8 – 10 mm. long and about 2.5 – 4 mm in width. Orange in color. Body covered with greyish wax; legs, antennae and eyes dark brown (Mohammad et al., 2025).
- Biology: In India, D. mangiferae is univoltine and reproduces sexually; long-lived wingless adult females mate with short-lived, winged males before migrating down the tree into loose soil within two or three metres of the trunk, to oviposit. In the soil, ach adult female lays about 335 eggs in a sculpted white wax ovisac. The eggs undergo diapause for about seven months (usually May to December in Pakistan) before hatching; the crawlers migrate up the trunk and branches of the host plant to settle in the inflorescences or other protected parts of the canopy to feed. Development from egg to reproductive adult takes about 78‒135 days. (Watson & Zheng, 2026)
- Economic Importance: This species has been reported as pest of mango in India (Atwal et al., 1969), of citrus in Madhya Pradesh, India (Saxena & Rawat, 1968, 1968a), of Tamarindus indicus and Cassia fistula in Uttar Pradesh, India (Lal et al., 1977) and of mango in Pakistan (Karar et al., 2010).
