Sinnathamby, S.V. 1980 Developments in the control of coconut scale, Aspidiotus destructor Sign. in Sri Lanka.. Ceylon Coconut Quarterly 28(1977-3/4): 81-88.

  • Notes: The parasite Aphytis chrysomphali was found in all the coconut growing districts sampled, and gave good control of Aspidiotus destructor in some districts. Of several naturally occurring predators, Chilocorus nigritus and Pullus [Scymnus] xerampelinus were the most important; other introduced predators could not be established. In a trial on the effects of spraying indigenous and exotic predators with kerosene oil/soap emulsion, all larvae were killed within 24 h, and high adult mortality also resulted. This method of controlling A. destructor is therefore not suitable except when predator populations are low. During the early stages of an outbreak, cutting and burning affected fronds are recommended.
