This paper was presented at a scientific congress entitled Parasitis 88 held in Barcelona, Spain, on 25-28 October 1988.] The coccinellid Cryptolaemus montrouzieri is used in the biological control of the pseudococcid Planococcus citri in Spain. Stages necessary for the establishment of quality control of the biological control agent are discussed including choice of defining characteristics, standardization of techniques for parameter measurement, selection of a reference population and fixing its parameters, and application of quality control or monitoring. In the case of C. montrouzieri, the defining characteristics of sexual activity, reproduction and adaptability are described.
