Remarks
- Systematics: Slide-mounted adult female T. pini can be differentiated from other species of Toumeyella by possessing the following combination of character states: (i) dorsal derm without aggregations of bilocular pores; (ii) stigmatic spines well developed, median spine 2.0–2.5× longer than a lateral spine; (iii) dorsal setae long and slender, straight or slightly curved, acute and with a stout base; (iv) ventral tubular ducts few, 1–5 on each side of vulvar opening; (v) perivulvar and spiracular pores quinquelocular, occasionally with some quinquelocular pores around antennal bases; (vi) anal plates each with 4 dorsal apical setae; (vii) antennae each 6-segmented; (viii) lateral angles of anal plates with a notch; and (ix) older specimens with a small sclerotic area anterior to anal plates. (Kondo & Garonna, 2022)
- Structure: Adult female about 2.0–7.5 mm long, subcircular, strongly convex, brown to reddish brown, with a white or cream median dorsal stripe or various mottling patterns of white, with small black spots scattered over dorsum; becoming completely brown or dark brown in old specimens. Slide-mounted adult female body subcircular, asymmetrical when developed in crowded spaces, 1.7–7.0 mm long, 1.6–7.0 mm wide; anal cleft about 1/5 of body length. Dorsal setae long and slender, straight or slightly curved, acute and with a stout base, numerous, scattered evenly on dorsum. (Kondo & Garonna, 2022)
- Biology: Three generation per year on Pinis taeda in Georgia, USA (Clarke et al., 1989b). Toumeyella pini reproduces sexually. (Kondo & Garonna, 2022)
- Economic Importance: Infestation of this soft scale appeared on Pinus taeda in Georgia, USA, following five application of pyrethroids (Clarke et al., 1992).
- General Remarks: Good description and illustrations of adult female by Williams & Kosztarab (1972), Hamon & Williams (1984) and by Kosztarab (1996). Photo in Kondo & Garonna (2022).
