Remarks
- Systematics: P. acericola and P. innumerabilis were considered the same species until Howard (1898) differentiated the two species P. acericola is usually collected on the leaves and P. innumerabilis occurs only on stems and is easily distinguished by its stout, spike-llike marginal setae. (Hamon & Williams, 1984).
- Structure: See colour photograph by Hamon & Williams (1984). Body usually oval, slightly convex. Colour of adult female maroon, with a mid-dorsal keel that is yellow-brown. The body is covered with flakes of clear wax. At maturity the females produce a white, longitudinally ribbed ovisac which is 2 or 3 times the body length. (Williams & Kosztarab, 1972) Found on twigs or leaves, depending on the developmental stage. Young adult female slightly convex, oval to elongate oval, 2.6–4.4 mm long, 1.3–3.0 mm wide, purplish or greyish brown, with a longitudinal yellow-brown dorsal keel, dorsum covered with flakes of clear wax. Ovisac broad, white, ribbed, up to 2–3× body length. (Kondo, Watson, Gavrilov-Zimin & Pellizzari, 2022)
- Biology: Life history in Arkansas, USA by Baerg (1947); One annual generation.
- General Remarks: Good description and illustration of adult female by Williams & Kosztarab (1972), Hamon & Williams (1984) and by Kosztarab (1996). Photograph in Kondo, Watson, Gavrilov-Zimin & Pellizzari, 2022.
