Keys
Remarks
- Systematics: Pseudocribrolecanium andersoni can be confused with P. colae (Green & Laing, 1924) both in the field and when mounted on slides. In the field, P. andersoni has body oval to slightly asymmetrical, with head rounded (in P. colae, body highly asymmetrical, with head tapering). The slide-mounted adult female P. andersoni has (P. colae condition in parentheses): 10–22 dorsal cribriform plates of 2 distinct sizes, present in 2 or 3 irregular rows in submargin (0–9 cribriform plates small and unequal in size, in a single irregular, submarginal row, or absent). Crawler with head rounded (head tapered); median stigmatic setae bluntly spinose with rounded apex (median stigmatic setae clavate, with swollen apex). (Watson, 2022a)
- Structure: Adult females secrete fine white powdery wax over the cuticle and nearby surfaces; infested leaves get covered uniformly with white powder interspersed with grey patches of sooty mould. Beneath the powder, adult female flat, irregularly oval, 2.2–4.2 mm long, reddish brown. Eggs yellow, subcylindrical with rounded ends, found beneath body of adult female. (Watson, 2022a)
- Biology: Brink & Hewitt (1991) discussed the effect of various mortality factors on population of the pest in South Africa. Brink & Hewitt (1992) studied the relationship between this soft scale and sooty mould, and effect of the latter on photosynthetic rates of
- Economic Importance: A citrus pest in some citrus-producing areas of South Africa and Swaziland (Brink & Bruwer, 1989; Brink & Hewitt, 1991).
- General Remarks: Description and illustration of adult female by De Lotto (1965a) and by Kondo (2006). Description and illustration of first instar nymph by Kondo (2006).
