Remarks
- Systematics: Adult females of Philephedra can be recognized by the following combination of character states: (i) body oval to elongate oval; (ii) dorsal setae absent; (iii) dorsal inverted tubercles present or absent; (iv) dorsal submarginal tubercles (of the typical type) absent; (v) dorsal tubular ducts present, scattered or in a distinct arrangement, of one or more types; (vi) dorsal microducts present or absent; (vii) dorsal simple pores present, rarely absent; (viii) preopercular pores present anterior to anal plates, often forming submedial bands or clusters on abdomen or thorax, and/or randomly distributed; (ix) anal plates subquadrate or wider than long; (x) anal ring with 10 setae plus rows of pores; (xi) eyespots present on margin, often hard to detect due to sclerotization of derm; (xii) marginal setae stout, spine-like, with pointed apices, separated from each other by distance from less than their length to about 4 times their length; (xiii) each spiracular cleft with 1 or more stigmatic spines, or spiracular spines/setae not differentiated from marginal setae; (xiv) antennae each with 8 segments, rarely with 9 segments; (xv) thoracic spiracles positioned close to pro- and mesothoracic coxae, with posterior spiracles usually larger than anterior spiracles; (xvi) spiracular pores mostly each with 5 loculi, but often with some pores with fewer or more loculi also; (xvii) legs well developed, with tibio-tarsal sclerotization and free articulation; tarsal digitules paired, of equal size, each slender and with small knobbed apex; claw digitules paired, of equal size, each stout, wider than a tarsal digitule, longer than claw and enlarged apically; claw without a denticle; (xviii) ventral tubular ducts numerous but usually fewer than on dorsum, present in segmental bands on medial areas of thorax and abdomen, and in submarginal band usually on thorax and head, or sparse; (xix) multilocular pores mostly each with 10 loculi (but often with some pores with fewer or more loculi also) abundant in perivulvar region [perivulvar pores], less abundant in bands or rows across abdominal segments; (xx) prevulvar setae numbering 3 pairs; and (xxi) anal fold with only 1 pair of fringe setae.
