Remarks
- Systematics: This species is similar to P. longispinus in general morphology, especially of having long posterior pairs of wax filaments while alive with their two posterior most filaments as long as the body, and thus P. orchidicola must have been misidentified as P. longispinus at least in Korea. Morphologically, P. orchidicola can be separated from P. longispinus by the following differences: presence of ventral marginal ducts (either with or without rims) on head (usually with a conspicuous group between bases of antennae) and all thoracic segments [ventral marginal ducts absent from head and only a few on thorax, all with rims in P. longispinus], and more importantly, median ventral oral collar tubular ducts present on abdomen as far forward as segment IV [median ventral oral collar tubular ducts present on abdomen only as far forward as segment VI in P. longispinus. (Koo, et al., 2017) Koo, et al., 2017 sequenced its COI barcode regions for about 48 samples and found that the difference between the two is quite large, about 10 % difference in p-distance, confirming they are not the same species at all.
- General Remarks: Good description and illustration of the adult female given by Beardsley (1966) and by Williams & Watson (1988a). Good description of the adult female given by Tang (1992).
