Remarks
- Structure: McKenzie (1967) provided a colour illustration of the adult female and its habitat. Colour photograph by Camporese & Pellizzari Scaltriti (1991) and by Matile-Ferrero et al. (2004). Circulus small, located on segment III, not divided by segmental fold of segments III and IV; translucent pores restricted to hind tibiae; multilocular pore bands on anterior and posterior margins of segments VI-VII; hind tibia length / hind femur length 1.0 (0.9-1.1); hind femur 198(154-232)µ long; 0(0-3) oral-collar tubular ducts in cluster mesad of cerarius 12.
- Biology: Occurring predominently on the subterranean portions of the orchid, although when infestations become heavy it feeds exposed upon the foliage (McKenzie, 1967; Camporese & Pellizzari Scaltriti, 1991).
- Economic Importance: Regarded a pest of orchids in California (Johnston, 1964). Camporese & Pellizzari Scaltriti (1991) reported that it was found on roots of orchids imported to Italy from Brazil. As this introduced species is mostly limited to orchids, its risk to US agriculture is minor (Miller et al. 2002). However, many of Florida’s natural orchids are listed as endangered on Florida’s Regulated Plant Index and the presence of phytophagous pests is of concern. In recent years, plant preservationists have been conducting reintroduction efforts of Florida’s native epiphytic orchids. Greenhouse-grown seedlings are cultivated from field-collected seeds and then reintroduced into conservation lands. Diminutive larval stages can go unnoticed as infected plants are moved from nurseries to field sites. (Zettler, et al., 2017)
- General Remarks: Good description and illustration of the adult female given by McKenzie (1967), Williams & Granara de Willink (1992) and by Gimpel & Miller (1996). Good description and illustration of the third instar female given by Gimpel & Miller (1996). Good description and distribution of the adult female given by McKenzie (1967), Williams & Granara de Willink (1992) and by Gimpel & Miller (1996).
