Remarks
- Systematics: GeneBank Accession No. AB439531 (Yokogawa & Yahara, 2009). Eulecanium kunoense can be differentiated from congeneric species by the following combination of features: (i) marginal setae of 2 types: conical, spinose, shorter setae on lateral margins; and long hair-like setae on anterior and posterior margins; (ii) stigmatic spines totalling 2 per stigmatic cleft; (iii) dorsal tubercles absent; (iv) dorsal tubular ducts absent; and (v) anal ring setae absent. (Kondo, Gavrilov-Zimin, et al., 2022)
- Structure: See colour photograph in Kawai (1980, Figs. 6.53, a,b), and in Gill (1988). Adult females highly convex, almost spherical, 3–5 mm wide, body margin with a broad internal ‘lip’ where the scale body attaches to the host. Most of the year dark chestnut brown, shiny, with numerous darker depressed spots. In spring before egg-laying, body yellowish, with 7 or 8 transverse black bands or partially coalescing black patches, with a diffuse median longitudinal orange or red stripe. Immature instars flat, yellow, with large wax plates and a fringe of wax. (Kondo, Gavrilov-Zimin, et al., 2022)
- Biology: Develops one annual generation in California (McKenzie, 1951a; Husseiny & Madsen, 1962). A minor pest to ornamentals in California, but regarded a potential pest in this state (McKenzie, 1951a; Gill, 1988).
- General Remarks: Good description and illustration of the adult female given by Gill (1988) and by Tang (1991). Good description of the adult female given by Borchsenius (1957).
