Remarks
- Systematics: The comprehensive book of Danzig and Gavrilov (2015) examines many of the character systems that have become standard in certain taxonomic analyses worldwide. Some of their conclusions are in direct contrast to the general thinking of past coccidologists. They question the utility of such characters as the presence or absence of the anal bar, the cluster of multilocular pores and tubular ducts on the margin of the prothorax, the number of cerarii, the presence of auxiliary setae in the cerarii, the presence of black pigments in the body. Because of their different interpretation of the character systems, there are a number of fairly extensive synonymies. Although they have presented their rationales for making these changes, we hesitate to accept all of them without more definitive information. It would be highly useful to have integrated morphological and molecular analyses before implementing synonymies. Practically, once species have been synonymized, the information and literature about each synonym becomes more and more difficult to trace over time. Thus, it is important to be as certain as possible about synonymy actions.
