Micrococcus baeticae Matile-Ferrero & Williams

NOMENCLATURE:

Micrococcus baeticae Matile-Ferrero & Williams, 2006: 125-128. Type data: SPAIN: Malaga, Antequera, Fuente de la Hiedra, Sierra de Las Cabras, by Berlese funnel, 7/27/2005, by M. Baena. Holotype female (examined), by original designation. Type depository: Paris: Museum National d'Histoire naturelle, France. Described: female. Illust.

DISTRIBUTION: Palaearctic: Spain [MatileWi2006].

GENERAL REMARKS: Detailed description and illustration in Matile-Ferrero & Williams, 2006.

SYSTEMATICS: This new species has many pores in transverse rows on the underside of the abdominal segments, which differentiates it from the other known species of Micrococcus. Micrococcus baeticae resembles M. confusus Miller & Williams, described from Morocco and Algeria in possessing a similar distribution of parastigmatic pores on the later margins of the thorax. It differs in possessing similar pores across the ventral abdominal segments and this charcter also separates M. baeticae from all other species so far described.

Micrococcus sardous Pellizzari

NOMENCLATURE:

Micrococcus sardous Pellizzari, 2011: 305-307. Type data: ITALY: Sardinia, Capo Ceraso, Olbia province, on roots of Ammophila arenaria?, 5/24/1995. Holotype female (examined), by original designation. Type depository: Padova: Dipartimento Agronomia Ambientale Produzioni Vegetali - Entomologia, Italy; type no. 712/1. Described: female. Illust.

HOST: Poaceae: Ammophila arenaria? [Pelliz2011].

DISTRIBUTION: Palaearctic: Sardinia [Pelliz2011].

GENERAL REMARKS: Detailed description and illustration in Pellizari, 2011.

STRUCTURE: Body shape broadly oval, very convex or almost spherical in reproductive females; red brown in colour. (Pellizari, 2011)

SYSTEMATICS: M. sardous is near to M. baeticae Matile-Ferrero & Williams, but differs mainly as follows (character-states on M. baeticae in brackets): 1) anal opening some distance from apex of abdomen (very close to apex of abdomen) 2) absence or paucity of parastigmatic multilocular pores on ventral abdominal segments (parastigmatic multilocular pores forming bands across abdominal segments), and 3) presence of several discoidal pores with a sclerotised rim around labium (absent on M. baeticae). O n the other hand, the morphology of the first-instar nymph of M. sardous, inside the female body is close to that of M. bodenheimeri Bytinski-Salz (Miller & Williams, 1995): it has parastigmatic pores, each with 5-8 loculi) on each side of the body, in groups of 3 - 4 near each spiracle and hind coxa, with one pore inside each spiracle, and there are no pores on the body margin between the anterior and posterior spiracles.
