Takagi, S., De Faveri, S., & Martin, J.H. 2011 Morphological Variation in the Mangrove-inhabiting Scale Insect Aulacaspis australis, with Synonymy between A. australis and A. martini (Sternorrhyncha, Coccoidea, Diaspididae).. Japanese Journal of Systematic Entomology 17(1): 1-7
Notes: Morphological variation in the mangrove-inhabiting scale insect Aulacaspis australis Brimblecombe (1959) has been examined on the basis of about 250 specimens of the adult female collected on the coast of Queensland, Australia. These specimens are variable in some features goclinally, locally, individually, or ecophenotypically. Six specimens from the type series of another mangrove scale, Aulacaspis martini Williams and Watson (1988), which was described from the northeastern coast of Papua New Guinea, and almost entirely included within the range of variation observed in the specimens from Queensland. A. australis and A. martini are no longer discrete from each other morphologically, and should be treated as synonyms, the synonymy remaining to be confirmed by examination of further material from New Guinea.
