Snead, H., & Williams, K.S. 1994 Factors that influence distribution of Cerococcus quercus scales on Quercus engelmanii.. Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America 75(2 (supplement)): 213.

Notes: Abstract: Oak wax scale attacks the rare engelman oak; this study examined whether oak stem morphology affects scale settlement and distribution; pubescence of branches and cambium thickness were compared to scale settlement in nature; scales colonized new tips of branches and scale-colonized branches had thicker cambium layers and lacked trichomes; when placed on related Q. agrifolia, scales settled more frequently on stems without trichomes; transplant experiments showed that C. quercus performed better on trees infested by their parents than on previously uninfested trees.
