  • Notes: This review of the growing of cassava in Zaire (where cassava is the most important root crop) includes notes on the screening of seedlings in a nursery under artificial conditions for resistance to pests. Only three wild cassava plants showed resistance to mealybug [Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero] and they were used in a hybridisation programme to transfer genes conferring resistance into locally adapted varieties. Some plants in another nursery were identified as showing some level of resistance. Resistance to cassava green mite [Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar)] was also identified.
