Notes: Studies on the bionomics of the mealy bug Maconellicoccus (Phenacoccus) hirsutus Gr. causing "bunchy top" in mesta as well as the nature and extent of damage were made. The peak period of infestation was noted during September and October. The active phase in the life cycle of the pest begins from the month of March and lasts until the month of October and may continue up to December, if the food plant is available. The pest over-winters in the capsules beneath the calyx and epicalyx and in the soil under field conditions. The durations of various stages, i.e. egg, nymph and adult were determined. The overlapping generations have been noted in a year from the month of March to November.
