Notes: The sugarcane scale, Melanaspis glomerata, assumed the status of a serious pest in Andhra Pradesh since 1972, with its first impact in East Godavari District. Though it is small and immobile except in the first nymphal (crawler) stage, its high fecundity and the availability of food throughout the year help in its fast spread. By 1973, the pest had gained entry into West Godavari District from East Godavari District and by 1974 made inroads into all the villages. Damage is discussed as well as biological control.
