Notes: In this research an analysis is carried out of the geographical distribution and the landscape impact of the wild cochineal (Dactylopius opuntiae) which is affecting the prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) in Spain. The results show, for the first time, the social and spatial significance of this insect and also demonstrate the dissociation between the management by the public administration and the aspirations of the citizens.
