Notes: Observations, mainly by trapping, on the phenology of Matsucoccus feytaudi Ducasse (the primary cause of the 'degeneration' disease of maritime pine [Pinus pinaster] in south-western France) in different localities in the Maures-Esterel region showed that adults of the 2 sexes did not always emerge at the same time, apparently because female nymphs were found at the bottom of cracks in the bark and male pupae nearer the top, and they thus experienced differing microclimates. Since females never reproduced parthenogenetically and each male could only fertilise one female, variations in the probability of meetings between the sexes resulted in considerable variation between one locality and another with regard to the annual multiplication rate of Matsucoccus populations. These findings partly explain the differences noticed between the survival rate of stands of P. pinaster in different places, and also indicate that M. feytaudi, which was recently introduced into the Maures-Esterel region, is not perfectly adapted to its environment.
