Misra, M.P., Pawar, A.D., & Ahmed, A. 1982 New records of parasites and predators of sugarcane scale insect, Melanaspis glomerata (Green) (Hemiptera: Coccidae) from eastern Uttar Pradesh, India.. Cooperative Sugar 14(3): 123-124.

Notes: A list is given of three parasites and three predators found attacking Melanaspis glomerata (Green) on sugar-cane during surveys in eastern Uttar Pradesh, India, in 1976-80. The three parasite species, Anabrolepis mayurai Subba Rao, a species thought to be Botryoideclava bharatiya Subba Rao and a species of Tetrastichus, were all common, whereas the predators, Cybocephalus sp., Litargus sp. and Neohydnus sp., were rare. Large populations of the parasites built up by the end of the season (October-November), but the local climate did not allow the populations to build up in time to limit damage by the pest. Both pest and parasites were destroyed when the canes were crushed, jeopardising the carry-over of the parasite to the new crop. It is suggested, therefore, that mass-rearing and release of the parasites in June-July could afford a valuable measure of biological control.
