Mendel, Z., Zehavi, A., & Zeidan, S. 1991a [Palaeococcus fuscipennis Burm. (Homoptera: Margarodidae), a new pest of pines in Israel.]. Hassadeh 71: 759-760.

Notes: Thepine monophlebid P. fuscipennis is an uncommon pest of pines (Pinus brutia, P. halepensis, P. pinea, P. pinaster and P. silvestris) and the atlantic cedar (Cedrus atlanticus) in the Mediterranean countries and central Europe. The scale settles on the stem and the crown of the tree producing large quantities of honeydew. The scale was discovered for the first time in Israel in the summer of 1990 in several plantations in north Samaria on Pinus brutia and P. helepensis. Between 2-7% of the trees were heavily infested, and the low and mid-sections of the stems were conspicuously covered with a thick layer of sootymold. None of the trees was markedly damaged, although activity of bark feeding borers Dioryctria spp. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was noticed on some of the infested trees. All developmental stages of the scale were observed feeding on different stages of the scale. The principal parasitoid of the scale, Cryptochaetum buccatum, was not found.
