Notes: [Conference held at INERA-M'vuazi, Bas-Zaire, Zaire, June 26-29, 1977.] A survey was made on cassava in the Congo in 1975, with a view to determining the severity of infestation by Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero. The areas in which infestation was observed in the north and south-west are indicated. Ants of the genera Camponotus, Crematogaster and Acantholepis, which are generally associated with mealybug colonies, were observed in infested areas, especially at Matsoumba. Other mealybugs present were Planococcus citri (Risso), Ferrisia virgata (Ckll.), Parasaissetia nigra (Nietn.) (Saissetia nigra), S. oleae (Ol.) and Pinnaspis strachani (Cooley); Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) and Oligonychus gossypii (Zacher) were also common on cassava, whether infested by Phenacoccus manihoti or not. The female and third-instar nymph of P. manihoti are described. Biology and damage caused in the Congo were similar to those observed in Zaire.
