Notes: The article summarises the 1999 report on the condition of French forests (Les Cahiers du DSF 1-2000). The salient features of the phytosanitary situation are presented, including the low level of damage in 1999 caused by major pests in French forests - deciduous tree defoliators, pine processionary caterpillar and bark beetles. An update is provided on the spread of the outbreak of the maritime pine scale (Matsuccocus feytaudi) in Corsica. The forest health monitoring networks, in particular the European Forest Damage Surveillance Network provided an assessment of the damage caused by the December 1999 storms.
