Kimouilo, H., & Costa, A.S. 1987 [Symptoms of yellow net of grapevine associated with scale insect feeding.].. Fitopatologia Brasileira 12(1): 104-106.
Notes: Yellow net of grapevine leaves, resembling the symptoms of certain virus diseases, has been recorded since 1971 in plants of commercial vineyards in the State of Sao Paulo (Brazil). The same anomaly has also been seen in potted plants at the Instituto Agronomico, Campinas. The anomaly is of minor importance at present. Symptoms of yellow net may appear in the whole leaf area or only in a section of them. It is a light or strong yellowing of he small and larger veins and was observed in variable number of branches and leaves of the same plant. Transmission tests by grafts and mechanical inoculation gave negative results. Perpetuation of the anomaly through cutting or budding was not obtained. There was no evidence that the anomaly was associated with toxicity of deficiency of soil element, not due to residual effects of pesticides. Observations show there is a correlation between presence of a scale insect Diaspidiotus uvae (Comstock, 1880) (Homoptera: Diaspididae) in the trunk and branches of affected vines and yellow net symptoms. Recovery of symptoms occurred in new leaves formed after these insects were removed. The yellow net symptoms are considered to be a result of toxins introduced by the insects, especially from colonies on the branches.
