Control of Quadraspidiotus perniciosus on ornamental plants in nurseries in Switzerland is currently accomplished by using 2 or 5% mineral oil or 0.2% fenoxycarb. The phytotoxicity of these insecticides against over 20 ornamental woody plant species and varieties was investigated in the field in 1991 and 1992. At present, mineral oil is the most effective and economic insecticide for use against the diaspidid. It was shown that mineral oil can be applied during the vegetative resting phase of the plants without problems provided the principal rules governing its use are observed. Setting aside areas in nurseries for plants susceptible to attack by Q. perniciosus allows rational use of mineral oils and monitoring of the scale. In Tessin, winter oils remain important for the production of plants that are susceptible to attack.
