Notes: The use of plant growth regulators to control insect pests is described. Numerous examples of the successful application of such products are cited; among them, heteroauxin which was most effective at controlling Quadraspidiotus perniciosus, Tur [chlormequat], hydroquinone, thiourea and CCC [chlormequat]. In experiments with wheat, Tur and hydroquinone not only reduced fertility of the adult insect but also decreased egg viability and slowed down larval development, ultimately creating conditions unfavourable for overwintering. Benefits of using growth regulators instead of toxic chemicals in protected areas are outlined.
