Notes: The advantages and drawbacks of treating apple trees at bud break with paraffin oil + parathion were compared with those of applying the standard insecticides diazinon and methidathion and the less toxic and more selective products fenoxycarb, chlorpyriphos-methyl, acephate, prothiophos, chlorpyrifos-ethyl and deltamethrin. The traditional treatments at bud break and application of fenoxycarb at the silver tip stage had very good initial and considerable residual effect against Quadraspidiotus perniciosus. Of the summer sprays chlorpyrifos-methyl and prothiofos were best, but had to be applied twice. A new evaluation method for determining scale infestation on five 9 cm2 patches on the trunk, cleaned with a fine wire brush in spring before spraying, was less laborious than the conventional method.
