Haude, M.E. 1998 Identification of colorants on maps from the early colonial period of New Spain (Mexico).. Journal of the American Institute for Conservation (JAIC online) 37(3): 240-270.

Notes: Twenty-two colorants were sampled from six hand-drawn maps created between 1578 and 1585. An inventory of known colorants from this period and region is provided. Red colorants identified and discussed include Coccus cacti or Dactylopius coccus, known informally as grana cochinilla or cochinilla.
