Colazza, S., Peri, E., & Lo Bue, P. 2007 Impiego dei feromoni in agrumicoltura per il contenimento degli insetti fitofagi: stato attuale e prospettive. [Insect pheromones as management tool to control citrus insect pests: present situations and outlooks.] . Informatore Fitopatologico 57: 35-41.
Notes: Insect pheromones have become a reality over the past decade for controlling insect pest populations. The use of pheromone traps for monitoring pest populations or for mass trapping, and the use of pheromone dispensers for mating disruption are well-established techniques included in most worldwide pest control programmes. Nevertheless, in Citrus integrated pest management programmes, pheromone applications are mainly used only for monitoring California red scale Aonidiella aurantii populations in combination with degree-day models. However, the recent availability of synthetic sex pheromones of other Citrus pests may open new opportunities to use these semiochemicals for mass trapping and/or mating disruption as alternative techniques to chemical insecticides. Pheromone applications and possible strategies for IPM programmes in Citrus are presented and briefly discussed.
