ABSTRACT: The genus Prodiaspis Cockerell, 1898, includes 16 species, from the Neartic (12), Neotropical (3) and Australasian (1) regions. It occurs almost exclusively on trees of the family Fagaceae. McKenzie & Nelson-Rees (1962) state that Protodiaspis is probably native to the Western Hemisphere. Protodiaspis has been characterized by Ferris (1937) as being small species, the adult females usually turbinate, with the thoracic region frequently heavily and irregularly sclerotized in fully mature specimens. Tubular ducts of the "twobarred" type, which at times exceedingly minute, are never arranged in marginal rows or clusters. Pygidium usually with segmentation much obscured. Anal opening present anterior to the center of the pygidium. In the present paper, a new species of the Protodiaspis from El CaIafate, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, is described. This species is monophagous on Berberis heterophilla (Berberidaceae). Drawings and photographs, as well as a discussion of the relationships of this species within the genus, are presented.
