Notes: Using a metagenomic analysis we studied here the carmine cochineal symbiont Dactylopiibacterium carminicum from two different Dactylopius species collected from six sites in Central Mexico. We found in the genomes of the bacterial symbiont a CRISPR spacer that matches a gene from an insect virus from the Baculoviridae nucleopolyhedrovirus family. Thus, we surmised that Dactylopiibacterium might confer protection to carmine cochineals against virus.
