Boriani, L., & Nicoli, G. 1995 Il polisolfuro di calcio tra passato e futuro. [Calcium polysulfide: from the past to the future.]. Informatore Agrario 51: 43, 73-76.
Notes: The history of use of calcium polysulfide is described. This product has been used as an insecticide in agriculture since the middle of the last century, largely against Coccoidea, particularly diaspidids, on fruit trees and grapevines. In addition to its use as an insecticide, the product has a certain efficacy against fungal pathogens. Since the 1940s there has been a greater reliance on new organic synthetic pesticides, but the use of calcium polysulfide is now being re-evaluated owing to its low impact on beneficial organisms and the environment. The mode of action, selectivity, physico-chemical properties, toxicology, advantages and disadvantages, and use in the field in Italy of calcium polysulfide are described. Future prospects in its use focus particularly on its role as a fungicide. Species mentioned include Aonidiella aurantii, Aspidiotus nerii, Ceroplastes rusci, C. sinensis, Chrysomphalus dictyospermi, Coccus hesperidum, Comstockaspis perniciosa, Epidiaspis leperii, Lepidosaphes beckii, Lichtensia viburni, Mytilococcus ulmi, Parlatoria ziziphus, Parthenolecanium corni, P. persicae, Planococcus citri, Pollinia pollinii, Pseudaulacaspis pentagona, Pulvinaria vitis, Saissetia oleae and Targionia vitis.
