Alvarez, C.G., Portillo Martínez, L., & Vigueras Guzmán, A.L. 1996 Factibilidad del cultivo de la cochinilla del carmin en Zapotlanejo, Jalisco, Mexico. [Feasability of cultivating the cochineal insect in Zapotlanejo, Jalisco, Mexico.]. Dugesiana 3(2): 19-31.

Notes: Four methods for the culture of cochineal insects (Dactylopius coccus) were evaluated: Bolivian, Oaxacan, Peruvian and Ricci methods. The first 3 methods used 20 D. coccus mother females (OV) and the Ricci method used 6 OV. The experiment was carried out under shed conditions, using separated cladodes from the prickly pear cactus, Opuntia ficus-indica. The Bolivian, Oaxacan and Ricci methods were found to be feasible for rearing D. coccus in Zapotlanejo, Mexico. The Ricci method was significantly different to the other methods, giving low cochineal production and is not recommended for use in cold seasons. The life cycle of D. coccus was 122 days in length, requiring 2025.5 day-degrees.
