Notes: ABSTRACT . The distribution and abundance of Rhodococcus perornatus was investigated in rose production locations in Isparta province during 2003. Since rose orchards are scattered through the region, geographic information systems and remote sensing techniques combined with GPS were utilized for mapping purposes. Heavy infestations of R. perornatus are mainly found at Isparta and Atabey and less often in Keciborlu, Gonen and Egirdir districts. Discussions with farmers from those areas indicated spray timing could positively affect the abundance of the pest. In areas where pesticides are applied in spring time to target the most resistant adult stage of the pest, this timing also hits the first generation of natural enemies, resulting in even higher pest populations in the following years. In the other areas which had low or no infestations, investigations revealed that pesticides are used after harvest and effectively control the first instar scales, known as the most susceptible stage. Another possible factor on distribution is geographic conditions. GIS analyses show that areas of high infestations are of fairly flat topography, which aids local wind dispersal of crawlers.
