Family Weitschatidae

Pseudoweitschatus Vea & Grimaldi

NOMENCLATURE:

Pseudoweitschatus Vea & Grimaldi, 2015: 15-16. Type species: Pseudoweitschatus audebertis Vea & Grimaldi, by original designation.

GENERAL REMARKS: Detailed description and illustration in Vea & Grimaldi, 2015.

STRUCTURE: Macropterous male Pseudoweitschatus, differs from Weitschatus by the combination of the following characters: antennal apical segment with curved bristles (vs. absent); hamulohaltere leaf-shaped (vs. bilobed); claw digitule spinose (vs. clavate); dorsal abdominal segments VII and VIII each with a single row of tubular ducts (vs. two to four rows of pores); small caudal extensions absent (vs. present); penial sheath triangular and short. (Vea & Grimaldi, 2015)

SYSTEMATICS: Pseudoweitchatus is a xylococcid-like genus, classified here in the family Weitschatidae based on the presence of a pterostigma on the forewing, a structure that is otherwise known only in Weitschatus among the xylococcid-like genera. This feature is found in Recent Margarodidae, but also Jersicoccidae (although only ventrally, Koteja [2000b]), Grimaldiellidae, Lebanococcidae, and Xiphos, n. gen. Weitschatus differs from Pseudoweitschatus by the latter having a bilobed hamulohaltere and a small caudal extension on tergite VIII (Koteja, 2008).

Pseudoweitschatus audebertis Vea & Grimaldi

NOMENCLATURE:

Pseudoweitschatus audebertis Vea & Grimaldi, 2015: 16. Type data: MYANMAR: Kachin: near Tanai village. Albian-Cenomanian boundary, in amber. Holotype (examined), by original designation. Type depository: New York: American Museum of Natural History, Department of Entomology Collection, New York, USA; type no. Bu-1416. Described: male. Illust.

DISTRIBUTION: Oriental: Burma (=Myanmar) [VeaGr2015].

GENERAL REMARKS: Detailed description and photograph in Vea & Grimaldi, 2015.

STRUCTURE: Male large and robust, 1.76 mm long, largest width at mesothorax, 465 Ám. Head: Transversely rectangular, dorsoventrally flattened, 405 Ám wide, 215 Ám long. Each ocular sclerite with a pair of large compound eyes protruding laterally, eye length ca. 125 Ám, each eye with about 100 ommatidia. Ocelli hardly observable but present dorsad to compound eyes. Dorsal midcranial ridge well developed and extending to a strongly sclerotized postoccipital ridge, setae present at least on margin of dorsum of head. Ventral surface of head with ridges forming a five-armed star comprising the midcranial ridge starting anteriorly and fusing with two preocular ridges and two preoral ridges. Antenna: 10-segmented and long, (Vea & Grimaldi, 2015)

Weitschatus Koteja

NOMENCLATURE:

Weitschatus Koteja, 2008: 39. Type species: Weitschatus stigmatus Koteja, by original designation.

GENERAL REMARKS: Description and definition by Koteja (2008).

SYSTEMATICS: This genus, comprising two species, was introduced as type genus of the family Weitschatidae, in the group of Orthezioidea (Koteja, 2008). The male of both species W. stigmatus and W. vysniauskai are alate. In addition to the description of (W. stigmatus and W. vysniauskai, Koteja (2008: 29) also reported on 12 inclusions of poor quality, of male, which he assigned to Weitschatus sp. Weitschatidae differs from other families by the combination of the following characters: antennal capitate setae absent (vs. present in Arnoldidae), pterostigma present on the forewing (vs. absent in Xylococcidae, Arnoldidae, Grohnidae, Serafinidae, and Xiphos, n. gen.), undifferentiated tarsal digitules (vs. clavate in Arnoldidae and Xiphos, n. gen.), small caudal extensions present or absent. (Vea & Grimaldi, 2015)
