Remarks
- Systematics: Hodgson (2023) designated a Lectotype and 13 paralectotypes. from the Natural History Museum, London. This is thought to be the only type slide of this species.
Platylecanium mesuae is similar to P. cocotis in having 2 or 3 marginal setae in each group along the margin, whereas P. castilloae (Cockerell) has only single setae in these positions (Hodgson 1994). In addition, Hodgson (1994) in his illustration of P. castilloae shows marginal setae within each stigmatic cleft and also marginal setae on each anal lobe, whereas these features appear to be absent from P. cocotis (Williams & Watson 1990). Also the latter authors show setae medially on each anal lobe and these could not be detected on P. mesuae. Williams and Watson (1990) also indicate that legs are entirely absent on P. cocotis, whereas they are reduced to minute stubs on P. mesuae and P. castilloae. (Hodgson, 2023)
- Structure: Slide-mounted material: Some parts of the dorsum covered in a broken glassy test. Body oval but asymmetrical, most obviously indicated by position of the mouthparts and length of the stigmatic grooves. Probably almost flat in life; stigmatic clefts distinct but narrow and sclerotized; anal cleft with sides adpressed, about 1/6th body length. Length 2.7–3.3 mm; width 1.7–2.4 mm. (Hodgson, 2023)
- General Remarks: The key in the paper, Joshi, S., & Firake, D.M. 2019 First record of Platylecanium nepalense Takagi (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Coccidae) from India, with redescription and a key to the species of Platylecanium Cockerell & Robinson, is for species of Platylecanium in the world, but by mistake Joshi wrote it's heading as key to the species known from India.
